Do you believe in Magic? I do. It all started when my husband and I were discussing how much we missed cookie. This empty hole in our lives and in our hearts. Then at Stamp Camp, when I told her I was looking into adopting another dog...my sweet friend Jana said...if I wanted her to, she would come with me to the Waterford Shelter. That is where we got Jill's cat from 4 years ago, we usually adopt through there. I just couldn't stop thinking about it. I was ready. Rob was ready, I talked to the kids (boys were okay if we did or didn't, Jill on the other hand started making all of those promises children make and getting very excited.) I kept re-enforcing that we were "just thinking" about this. I went online to the shelter's site (sent a link to some friends asking them to vote for that shelter for some contest) and looked around. There was a "PET FINDER" link. You can look at Pet Finder if you are in PetCo In Waterford. Or check them out online at petfinder.com
There are thousands of dogs in need. When I saw this puppy I fell in love, his name was Magic. I sent an email to my husband saying I was in love with this one, he was my favorite. He sent me one back saying "We have only had females, this is a male ... and I thought you wanted one about 9 months old that was house trained...this one is just a pup." Okay, I can take a hint. So I looked and looked and looked. Jill looked, Rob looked. We had about 10 that they narrowed it down to. This guy...Magic...wasn't on the list. On the list were pure breed dogs, small dogs, large dogs, medium dogs, long haired, short haired. All girls. All between 7 and 9 months old. They were all beautiful. None were my favorite, so I figured I would let them pick. Narrowed down to three I shot out three emails to the different rescues. I gave them a brief rundown of who we were and were we lived and was "Dolly, Rani, or Tammy" still up for adoption. Tammy was going to need surgery and they weren't sure when, for hip displasia....No. Rani, I was told by the very honest people at the shelter, might not be able to be handled by my 13 yo daughter, they just didn't know how she could handle the dog...ummmm, NO. Dolly had been adopted and was going to her new family in New London on Friday. Strike three, but there are thousands right? I would just have to look again. We weren't in a hurry. Then the woman who has been fostering Dolly emailed me saying "have you looked through the rest of the dogs we have available at Little Souls? I think Magic would be a great match for your family" WHAT, HUH? Magic? Sure enough the link lead me to this adorable pup. My favorite. Out of all the thousands of dogs, what are the odds of that? I took this as a sign...he was mine, no reservations. She set up an interview and checked out our home and family, we filled out the paperwork and on Friday when she delived Dolly to New London she also had Magic in the car, he was going to his forever home, my home! Here is a little background on him.
Magic came from a shelter in Arkansas that needed space for incoming dogs. He had been around a bit before he finally landed in Connecticut. He's a sweet gentle little soul who just wants to be loved. Magic has short legs, a longer body and soft fur. We believe him to be Cardigan Welsh Corgi and Border Collie mixed. This little boy is about 3 months old and has a mellow personality. He currently weighs about 10 lbs and will probably be a small to medium size dog. Magic gets along well with other animals, just ask my cats. This boy was truly a treasure waiting to be found. Magic has already been neutered, his shots are up to date, wormed and microchipped. Oh, and our dog magic has a new name....we were told because he is so young and had been so many places, short stays each time, he didn't know his name. I knew his name when I looked at him. He is Jake. Of course if you ask Jill he is Jakie, or Jake n bake, or a few other funny nicknames. She is in love. So am I. He actually melted my boys hearts, I watched it happen. My husband, my husband has a dog that makes him laugh and will be his buddy and follow him around. Friday was a very good day, for all of us, but especially for Jake. He is so happy that his butt wags. It wags so hard that when he runs it throws him off balance. He only went pee outside, no accidents on his first day! He hasn't barked yet, but I am sure he will figure out it is okay if he does. In a couple of weeks I hope all of his memories of any bad times leave him...and he only remembers Gail, who rescued him, and his family who loves him. We have a little magic in our lives, healing our hearts, and his name is Jake.
